I’ve just watched a short video on YouTube that explained to me why so many people fail at basically… everything.
27 years of being alive and 5 years of being an online marketer and I have finally just realized this now!
This video, by top internet marketing guru, speaker and all round awesome guy Tai Lopez explains exactly what most of us do wrong and how we can go about fixing that.
Obviously, my business is blogging and I like to see other newbie bloggers succeed with their own blogs so obviously, I decided to share this with you.
Today, we’re going to take a look at the
The 1 Common Mistake A Blogger Will Do Before Starting Blogging
and that is;
Not getting knowledgeable about how to become a blogger.
In his video, Tai shares with us his 3-step formula for achieving success in anything and it goes like this:
See most people, including me, start from the “execution” part without ever getting the knowledge and strategy to execute on our goals. So basically, we’re starting the other way around.
Let me give you an example: Say you’ve finally made the decision to start working out and getting fit and healthy. Cool.
However, most people (typically the people that usually fail at their goals) start from the “execution” meaning they just go to the gym and “wing it”.
In reality, the people that achieve their goals, tend to get knowledgeable about how to get fit, apply a strategy (what to do and how many times a week) and then start executing.
Blogging is the same thing.
You might have read that if you want to start a blog, just go on WordPress, get a blog and start blogging. That’s it.
Well yes, you can do that but if you want to make sure you succeed with your blog and be able to stick with it long enough for it to become a popular blog, then you need to have some knowledge to go along with your efforts.
Thinking about it, telling somebody that wants to start a blog to “just go do it” without any tips or how to get started is insane.
There are many, many things you need to understand before you can build up a successful blog or even an online business.
I’m guilty of this too, I started my first blog about food, and it had the most embarrassing domain name ever (www.things-we-eat.com). Back then, I didn’t know:
- How to write good content
- How to work on WordPress
- How to format the text so it’s more visually pleasing
- How to do SEO
- How to get traffic
- How to create an email list that generates leads
- and much, much more.
Needless to say, that “food blog” didn’t last but at the end, it worked out fine. I am now a full-time blogger but it came at a very costly expense, and that is; time.
I’ve been blogging and doing online marketing for about 5 years now and it’s only till about a year and a half ago that I’ve recently started making consistent income enough that I can live on full time.
Read my post “Proof Success Takes Time” to see how much I had to “wait” to see results from this blog you are reading right now.
So, What Is The Solution Here?
How can you learn everything you need to know about starting a blog? To be honest, you can’t.
What? Well how am I supposed to start blogging and avoid failure?
Well, some skills you will have to learn along the way.You do not need to know
You do not need to know everything right away, but you need to know enough that you’re not wasting precious time working on or doing something that is just plain wrong.
It’s no use for you to learn how to start an email list if you don’t know how to buy, register and host your own domain name.
And you do not need to worry about learning how to increase your blog’s sales if you are still not sure how exactly you are going to get traffic to your blog
So what are the fundamental things a blogger should know before starting a blog?
All you have to know right now, at this very second is this:
- What you want to blog about
- How to register a domain name (or get one for free)
- How to set up WordPress
- How to write content that people want to read.
That is it.
Honestly, if you’re a beginner and you want to start a blog, make sure you understand those 4 main categories and you are good to go.
One thing that I will add to the list is that you need to realise (note I didn’t say “learn”) that success in blogging doesn’t come fast or easy.
It takes real work, dedication and many, many hours of “getting your hands dirty” and testing out ideas.
Even if you master those 4 steps above, I am willing to bet that you won’t make any money (or even get any visitors) with just 2 posts published.
It doesn’t work that way.
So, Where Can I Learn And How Can I Avoid Making Mistakes?
Simple; before you start a blog, go look for information on the internet and find the knowledge on what you need to know right now.
Again, don’t try to learn everything at once before you get started, that is called “analysis paralysis” meaning you will be bombarded with so much information (that you don’t really need) and it will slow down your progress.
Just find some blogs where they share tips about blogging and start from there: Here are my favourite ones (obviously I included my own blog too haha):
- Blog Tyrant.
- Matthew Woodward.
- A Blog On Blogging.
- Wealthy Affiliate (see below for more details on WA).
These blogs all provide great information and tips on how to build up a successful blog and it would be wise if you can spend just a few hours reading some of their blog posts to understand how exactly this whole “blogging thing” works.
