Last week I published a roundup post bringing forth 9 ways teachers can make money online in the Summer.
A reader left me a comment asking if I’ve ever come across Chegg Tutors, a website where anyone with a degree from a 4-year university can sign up and earn money by tutoring others on any topic that they’d like.
Truth be told; up until then I hadn’t heard of Chegg Tutors, but I’m glad I found out about it as I’ve been researching it ever since and today – as you will see from this Chegg Tutors review – I personally think this is a great way to make quite a good income doing private-tutoring online.
Here’s what you will be learning about in this review:
- What Chegg Tutors is.
- How to get started as an online tutor.
- How much money you can expect to earn with Chegg Tutors.
- A few pros and cons which I think you should know about (don’t skip this).
+ I’ll also share with you a few Chegg Tutors alternatives which you’re going to want to know about if you want to make money tutoring.
So, if you’ve been considering becoming a tutor online (and making money), be sure to stick around.
Let’s get started…
What Is Chegg Tutors?
Before we go into the nitty-gritty details about Chegg Tutor, let me first tell you what it is all about:
Chegg Tutors is a website that connects online tutors with students who want to learn a specific topic online.
The “online learning” industry is booming so yes; this is a fantastic idea and kudos to whoever came up with it.
Basically, anyone who wants to learn about a specific topic (with personal one-on-one help), can visit the Chegg Tutors website, drop in their question/concern and then Chegg Tutors will find the appropriate mentor/tutor to help answer that question.
As a starter member, students pay $15 per week and they get 30 minutes of “chat time” with any tutor they desire. For example;
If someone wants to learn about Astrology, they can find an Astrology tutor on Chegg and they’ll pay $15 for a 30-minute chat with a tutor (if the student would like more than 30 minutes, then the rate is an additional $0.50c for each minute).
From a student’s perspective, Chegg Tutors in an incredibly useful platform, but let’s now see if this a worthwhile opportunity for tutors to make money.
How Much Money Can You Make With Chegg Tutors?
On the Chegg Tutors website, it claims that tutors can earn approximately $1000 a month using their platform.
This is the average monthly earnings of the top 5% of tutors who use the Chegg Tutors platform.
The current pay rate for tutors is $20 an hour, which compared to the many other “online jobs” out there, it’s actually quite good.
How Does Chegg Tutors Pay Out?
You will be getting paid weekly via PayPal as long as you have reached the minimum payout threshold of $50.
Getting paid weekly I am sure will be appreciated by many who want to start making money online, and the fact that you can get paid via PayPal is even more good news.
What Can You Teach On Chegg Tutors?
Anything you’re good at – provided you hold a degree from a 4-year university.
You can select up to 40 subjects/topics which you think you are proficient enough to tutor but overall;
There are hundreds of different topics that people are looking for private tutoring on so; if there’s something that you know more than others, you can most certainly make a bit more extra $$s tutoring on Chegg Tutors.
How To Get Started With Chegg Tutors
All you need to register as a Chegg tutor is:
A Degree: Since this is more “academic based”, you must have a degree from a reputable university – (proof must be provided with the registration process).
An account: You can create an account on Chegg Tutors either with your email address or with your personal Facebook account.
Previous experience: This is not a must, but since there’s a lot of competition on Chegg (which is a small drawback I will discuss further down below), applicants who have previous teaching experience will be preferred.
A test?: In some cases, you may even be required to go through a small test to prove your expertise on a given topic.
Some other Chegg Tutors reviews also point out that submitting an introductory video of yourself can also help speed up the registration/approval process.
The Pros & Cons: What You Need To Know
PRO: Compared to other online tutoring platforms, the $20 per hour payout is pretty good, so I will count that as a pro. (Some argue though that since they require a 4-year degree, the payouts should be higher – I’ll leave that up to you to decide).
PRO: One of the best things about making money online is that you can do it from home and also you can work at your own hours. You are not bound by hourly commitments with Chegg Tutors and of course; you can do it from home (or anywhere else you’d like).
CON: Since Chegg Tutors is one of the highest paying tutoring sites, there’s a lot of competition that you’d need to compete against (especially if you’re new and tutoring a popular topic) – just something to keep in mind.
CON: Work is not always guaranteed. You may have a period where you are super busy with students and other times where nobody is interested. Expect this and do not see Chegg Tutors a stable and consistent income that you can rely on (especially when you are just starting out).
Chegg Tutors Alternatives
Listed in my previously mentioned “summer jobs for teachers guide” is another similar platform which I think deserves a mention, and that is; VIPKid.
VIPKid allows you to tutor English to foreign students and the reason I am bringing this up is that if you do not “qualify” to use Chegg Tutors, you can try out with VIP Kid as they do not require as many qualifications (albeit you can only teach English).
How I Make Money Online Teaching Others
Last but not least, I also want to share with you how I make money, which is pretty much similar to “online tutoring”.
I teach people how to make money online and I make money by writing educational content which brings visitors to my website(s). I then use the various monetization methods to turn my readers into a full-time income stream.
Thank you very much for reading my Chugg Tutors review.
Overall, I really like this platform and I give it a solid thumbs up as I think it’s just a great way to make money online by utilizing what you already know and helping others in the process.
The payout is great, they pay weekly and you are free to work as much (or as little) as you please; three big things that make making money online a joy!
I’ll leave you to it.
